PJ's Crowd Favorites

  • Restoran O&S-

When it comes to a nice and decent place for Penang hawker food in the PJ region, O & S Coffee Shop in the Paramount Garden neighbourhood comes out on top. This eatery is on a corner lot, directly across from a Caltex gas station. A variety of vendors serve Penang specialties such Prawn Mee (Har Mee), Assam Laksa, Curry Laksa, Char Koay Teow, and Har Gou Chee Cheong Fun.

  • Nasi lemak 223-

There are two stalls at Medan Selera 223 that serve great nasi lemak packages, but the more popular one is the one marked in red. Fluffy coconut rice, delicious sambal, and a half-egg are included in the tiny brown packets (from RM1.50), providing for a full one-person lunch. For a more substantial meal, order the Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken (from RM5).

  • Nasi Lemak Bumbung-

Nasi lemak bungkus, or nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf, is a traditional way to enjoy this delectable dish (packed). It has fried peanuts on the side, cucumber, egg, and sambal. Back in the day, a pack of it cost RM0.50. It now costs around RM2 per pack.

  • Village Park Restaurant -

Village Park Restaurant in Damansara Utama is a nasi lemak powerhouse. Locals will tell you that this is where people come for their nasi lemak fix, and if you arrive after 12:30, be prepared for a large lunch crowd. Noodles and nasi dagang are also available.

  • Sri Ganapathi Mess-

Banana leaf rice has quickly become one of my favourite dishes, especially on days when I'm craving carbs. Nothing compares to parboiled rice atop fresh banana leaf sheets, complemented by vegetarian side dishes and drowned in a variety of curries. It's fiery, flavorful, and has a rich aroma of spices.

  • Acha Curry House-

At Acha, a standard banana leaf rice lunch costs RM6 and includes a side of sambal ikan bilis, a spicy and sweet onion-based sambal. The caramelised onion flavour is enjoyable, and the ikan bilis remained crispy despite the sauce coating.

  • Chuan Lee Restaurant (kuey teow)-

The uncle in charge of the wok is notorious for being grouchy and irritable, especially during peak hours. You are not permitted to issue commands to him; if you try, expect to get yelled at. His assistant (presumably his brother) is in charge of the orders, money, and servings.

  • Lao Ping Hokkien Mee -

Each plate of noodles is prepared to order and is rich in "wok" flavour. It's well worth the wait. Possibly the best Hokkien Mee in the city. According to reviews, the Cantonese Fried Kuey Teow is also tasty.

  • Ahwa Hokkien Mee-

When it comes to Hokkien Mee in Subang, the locals will strongly advise you to visit Ah Wa in SS14, which is widely regarded as one of the best in the area. Ah Wa Hokkien Mee, which is housed in Restoran Unlimited, hails from Petaling Jaya. Because of the positive response from customers, they decided to open another location. They remain open for 22 hours a day, only closing their blinds for a brief period between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m., making it an ideal spot for supper. The décor is modest, like any other hawker stall in Malaysia, but it's nice enough to sit and talk while eating wonderful food.
